CHAPTER TWELVE

Jessica sipped her tea and then resumed stitching the button on her shirt. They’d found all but one that she’d lost during the disrobing frenzy from the night before. She sat at the table, wearing one of Sam’s shirts while she reattached the buttons to hers.

“Sorry about that.” Sam smiled at her across the breakfast table.

“No, you’re not.”

“No, I’m not.” Sam rested her chin on her hand. “What are you up to today?”

“I have to go home for a little while and see about things, maybe pick up some fresh clothes, with buttons.” She paused and took another sip of her tea. “Then I thought I’d come back and make us dinner. We still have a barter arrangement that needs to be fulfilled.”

“I haven’t forgotten.”

“I’m starting to think you’re dragging this project out so that you can keep me here cooking forever.”

Sam grinned. “Don’t think the thought hasn’t crossed my mind, but there’s only so much lollygagging I can work into building a hope chest. I’m actually almost finished.” Sam stood and walked around the table to give Jessica an affectionate kiss. “Then I suppose I’ll have to start making you dinner.”

“Should I be afraid?”

“Maybe.” Sam reached for her hat and settled it low to shade her eyes from the bright morning sun she was about to step into. “I better head to the field and see how the crops are faring. I’ll see you later.”

“I’ll be back around four.”

Sam was almost out the door when she turned back. “Why don’t I come get you in the wagon? It’s too far for you to walk over and then come back a few hours later.”

“I’d like that, thanks.” Jessica figured Sam was still feeling bad about not being honest with her and was trying to find small ways to make it up to her. She didn’t mind the extra attention. Sam had been a little distracted this morning, but Jessica figured maybe she was just tired. They had stayed up quite late.

Jessica smiled as she reattached the last two buttons. If she’d only known how things were going to turn out she wouldn’t have gotten herself so worked up about Sam’s trip to Macon, but there was no way she could have known. And after reading the letter from Helen, well, her imagination and her insecurities just got the better of her.

After another twenty minutes, Jessica had pulled on her own shirt, gathered her things into her basket, and was headed out the door. She looked for Sam in the far pasture but didn’t see her. Oh well, she was just going to wave good-bye anyway. She’d better get home now so she could be back to start dinner by four.

As she turned up the road away from Sam’s farm, she was so happy she almost felt giddy. She kept catching herself smiling as she strolled in the warm summer air. Thick oak leaves stirred in the breeze, causing patches of sunlight to open up on the dirt roadway and then shape shift across the ground.
